Vein guidance in short directives

Which tests diagnose varicose veins?

The question asks what will happen at the appointment. Which tests, if any, are used to confirm varicose veins? Three publishers answer, and they do not describe the same step.

Usually an exam, sometimes an ultrasound

Expect an exam first. Many cases need nothing more. If you are sent to a specialist, a duplex ultrasound is the test named most often. Ask which path applies to you before the visit.

What each publisher says

MedlinePlus says: "Doctors often diagnose varicose veins from a physical exam."

Cleveland Clinic says: "Providers usually don’t need additional diagnostic tests to diagnose varicose veins."

The NHS describes the specialist step: "If you're referred to a specialist they'll usually do a test called duplex ultrasound to confirm if you have varicose veins and plan your treatment."

The source is those three passages. Our reading puts them in order. The exam comes first, and the ultrasound follows when a specialist is involved or treatment needs planning.

Ask what will be done at your visit

Ask the clinician treating you whether an ultrasound is planned and what it would add. Before the visit, read a patient guide to varicose veins, a radiology page on evaluation and treatment and questions to ask your doctor.

What the sources do not say

The passages do not say which test a given clinic uses or what any test costs. For a Westerville reader, the clinic itself is the only source for that.
